‘One Front Door’: Headspace Health Launches New Platform Following Merger with Ginger

About a year after digital mental health companies Headspace and Ginger merged, Headspace Health announced a new product for employers on Friday that unites the strengths of each entity.   

The product — available January 1 — combines Headspace’s meditation and mindfulness services with Ginger’s coaching, therapy and psychiatry services. Employees of Headspace Health’s customers will start with an online onboarding survey that asks for their goals and what they’re struggling with. From that survey, Headspace Health will provide a personalized care plan based on the employee’s needs. Users will then be able to download the app to access the content. There are also check-ins and mental health assessments so patients can adapt their plan as their mental health evolves. 

“[Members receive a] personalized experience from day one: one front door, one unified onboarding with a singular destination that can really provide them with lifelong mental well-being and mental health support,” said Leslie Witt, chief product and design officer of Headspace Health, in an interview. 

Not only does the new platform serve employees, but Headspace Health’s employer customers, Witt said. It provides program management support to help employers implement the program, as well as insights on employee engagement and outcomes. It also offers Employee Assistance Program services, such as training for managers on how to handle mental health in the workplace.

Ultimately, through its new product, Santa Monica, Calif.-based Headspace Health aims to improve the administrative burden for employers, Witt said. Instead of offering multiple mental health solutions to serve different needs, employers can contract with Headspace Health and receive a variety of services through one platform. This is especially beneficial as employers struggle with point solution fatigue.

“There are a bevy of solutions that exist both in the behavioral health benefits landscape as well as beyond,” Witt said. “That level of fragmentation of services often looks like a bureaucratic management burden for employers … So we have single procurement, single implementation, single eligibility and authentication.”

The company plans to track the program’s success. It recently put out a request for third-party researchers to study Headspace Health’s impact on mental health. Its researchers will be examining clinical measures — such as stress reduction, anxiety reduction and symptoms of clinical depression — as well as the value it provides to employers in terms of healthcare spending, Witt said.

Headspace and Ginger merged into a $3 billion company in August 2021, creating Headspace Health. It has more than 3,700 employer customers, including Starbucks, Adobe and Delta Air Lines. 

Other digital mental health companies include Spring Health and Calm. The latter also recently announced a new platform called Calm Health, which provides condition-specific mental health programs to its users.
